Plain-language definitions for common commercial refrigeration systems, cold rooms and food-service equipment terms.

Refrigerant

The working fluid used to absorb and reject heat in a refrigeration system.

Condensing unit

An assembly commonly containing a compressor and condenser.

Evaporator

The heat exchanger where refrigerant absorbs heat from the cooled space or product.

Remote system

A refrigeration system where major condensing equipment is located away from the refrigerated case or room.

Self-contained equipment

Equipment containing the main refrigeration components within one packaged unit.

Defrost

A method of removing frost or ice from an evaporator.

Pull-down

The process of reducing product or room temperature to the desired level.

Refrigerant recovery

Removing refrigerant into suitable equipment or a container during service or disposal.

Global warming potential

A relative measure used to compare the climate effect of greenhouse gases.

Authority having jurisdiction

The regulator, environmental authority, building official or other body responsible for applicable requirements.
